I have to agree with you. It's like drinking a pine tree. It's simply a matter of taste though.
For example, I love tequila. Like, spend-the-kind-of-money-people-spend-on-scotch love it. Because, there are really good tequilas. But that doesn't mean that everyone even will drink it. My mom will not touch it; even the bottle of Esperanto I brought back from Mexico.
For the record, I prefer stouts over IPAs.

Some people can't handle other people having differing opinions.
My beer drinking friends are very divisive on IPA's. They love em or hate em. I don't really have a problem either way.
It's very much an acquired taste...but a lot of things are. Many people love coffee, and to this day I can't stand the stuff.
Not to say I love all IPA's. Like anything else out there, there is good and bad. I was in Mammoth over this past weekend, and tried their local brewery's IPA. Me and a friend (also an IPA lover) agreed, it was fucking awful.
